ââ¦Itâs not right. Itâs just not right. Once he takes revenge, thereâs no going back.â
After Kaito left, I fell to the dirty tavern floor. I had failed to persuade him.
But Iâd learned something in the process: I knew he wasnât dead inside.
How many people have I seen?
In the years that followed the demon war, I had traveled to towns all across the land, bringing goods to impoverished regions.
Iâd seen wives whoâd lost their husbands. Children whoâd lost their parents. Brothers whoâd lost their sisters. Soldiers whoâd lost their friends. Iâd glimpsed the darkness in their hearts, and I saw how they patched it up just so they could go on.
And I also witnessed what happened to the people who chose revenge, screaming out for it as their bodies wasted away. Saw the cruel manner in which they met their ends on a bloodstained blade. Saw their faces, warped by anger and spewing blood, cursing the world and everyone in it to the bitter end.
I saw the ones whoâd succeeded, too. I saw them at the end, clutching the knife of vengeance, utterly consumed by an anger they gave their entire life to fuel.
Each and every time, theyâd been crying. As if the cycle of hurt went on. After it was all over, there was only a hollow laugh. No joy, no sadnessâjust a voiceless, wailing cackle that seemed to go on forever.
ââ¦But if Kaitoâs saying he wants revenge so that he can live, that means thereâs still a chance.â
This avenger wasnât like the others. He hadnât given up on life just yet.
âI wonât back down.â
If this was a business discussion, this obstacle would be enough to get me to cut my losses and back out, but it wasnât. This was about somebodyâs life. And where there was a will, there was a way.
I thought of the towns Iâd encountered, devastated by the demon lordâs armies. I thought of the people Iâd met, starving and afraid. I thought of Minnalis, wasting away in a dirty cage god only knows where.
I thought of myself, hiding in terror on war-stricken plains, hearing another scream off in the distance and wondering if it was one of my friends whoâd died this time.
âI donât want to live through that horror again.â
I wanted to be able to smile. I wanted to be able to be happy.
I wanted to hear true laughter, not a hollow mockery of it, devoid of either coldness or warmth.
âI donât want them to cry because I didnât try hard enough.â
No matter how difficult it was, I couldnât give up. I clenched my fists tightly.
