“…It’s not right. It’s just not right. Once he takes revenge, there’s no going back.”

After Kaito left, I fell to the dirty tavern floor. I had failed to persuade him.

But I’d learned something in the process: I knew he wasn’t dead inside.

How many people have I seen?

In the years that followed the demon war, I had traveled to towns all across the land, bringing goods to impoverished regions.

I’d seen wives who’d lost their husbands. Children who’d lost their parents. Brothers who’d lost their sisters. Soldiers who’d lost their friends. I’d glimpsed the darkness in their hearts, and I saw how they patched it up just so they could go on.

And I also witnessed what happened to the people who chose revenge, screaming out for it as their bodies wasted away. Saw the cruel manner in which they met their ends on a bloodstained blade. Saw their faces, warped by anger and spewing blood, cursing the world and everyone in it to the bitter end.

I saw the ones who’d succeeded, too. I saw them at the end, clutching the knife of vengeance, utterly consumed by an anger they gave their entire life to fuel.

Each and every time, they’d been crying. As if the cycle of hurt went on. After it was all over, there was only a hollow laugh. No joy, no sadness—just a voiceless, wailing cackle that seemed to go on forever.

“…But if Kaito’s saying he wants revenge so that he can live, that means there’s still a chance.”

This avenger wasn’t like the others. He hadn’t given up on life just yet.

“I won’t back down.”

If this was a business discussion, this obstacle would be enough to get me to cut my losses and back out, but it wasn’t. This was about somebody’s life. And where there was a will, there was a way.

I thought of the towns I’d encountered, devastated by the demon lord’s armies. I thought of the people I’d met, starving and afraid. I thought of Minnalis, wasting away in a dirty cage god only knows where.

I thought of myself, hiding in terror on war-stricken plains, hearing another scream off in the distance and wondering if it was one of my friends who’d died this time.

“I don’t want to live through that horror again.”

I wanted to be able to smile. I wanted to be able to be happy.

I wanted to hear true laughter, not a hollow mockery of it, devoid of either coldness or warmth.

“I don’t want them to cry because I didn’t try hard enough.”

No matter how difficult it was, I couldn’t give up. I clenched my fists tightly.
